Eva Longoria Parker At The 2010 MTV EMAs
Eva Longoria hosted the 2010 MTV EMAs on Sunday night. Throughout the evening she's gone through a dozen costumes (you can see some of them here), but this Georges Hobeika dress (?) was her red carpet look. This Alexis Carrington on top-Vegas cocktail waitress on bottom isn't working for me. At all. Probably because Eva seems to have forgotten the skirt- this is what the Hobeika Couture (from his 2010 Spring/Summer runway) is supposed to look like:

Eva Longoria Parker At Her New Perfume Launch
I think I've been staring at this photo of Eva Longoria Parker for too long. I really liked the makeup initially, but now I'm starting to see unblended areas around her eyes and it's making me want to go after her with a good brush. Am I going crazy? Are you going to try her new perfume?

Julie Hewett Takes Responsibility

Remember this?
It seemed that the consensus was that Eva should have known better than go out like this. But celebrity makeup artist Julie Hewett is actually proud of this look and sent an email newsletter/press release with information on how to recreate Eva's makeup with her products.
Now, don't get me wrong- I usually like Julie Hewett's work and makeup. The red lipsticks are beautiful and her cream shadow/eye liner in Newsprint Bleu is a staple in my makeup wardrobe. But I'll be staying far far away from Silverlake eye shadow (there's also Dovima under the brow bone, which is actually a great highlighter, but the evil Silverlake seems to have eaten it alive).
Now we know.

Eva Longoria- Two Makeup Looks

There's no time like New Year's Eve to go all out there with makeup and wear something bold. Eva Longoria chose eye makeup in cool tones with a silvery shimmer. I'm not sure how I'm feeling about this look, though, as it's a bit too harsh. Eva is a shade or two darker than me but our skin undertones are close, and I often find that certain silver and lavender eye shadows need more blending and a careful pairing with softer colors in order to work on me.
In any case, Eva Longoria's New Year's Eve look can be achieved using Paul & Joe's Mesmerize holiday palette and probably also a touch of their silver Eye Gloss. And quite a bit of false eyelashes, most likely.
I much prefer Eva's look from a few weeks ago. Her hair also looks fabulous:

It's All Fun And Games Until Someone Trips On The Dress And Loses An Eye

I know what Eva Longoria is going through. She and I are about the same height (I might be half an inch taller, actually), which means just about everything I buy is too long (to the joy of Josephine, my seamstress). It seems like Eva skipped the tailor with this dress and it can get dangerous.
Other than that she looks fabulous and she's finally doing something about her hair (last seen PTA-ready), but a dress that drags on the floor and gets under one's feet can't be a very good idea.

Emmys 2008 Dresses And Makeup Highlights
As always, watching the Red Carpet Shoe makes me wish the entire E! team would be fired and replaced. Preferably by mimes. But we're not here to discuss Giuliana Rancic and her vocabulary, are we?
It's always a bit weird: The stars are in full evening wear, all blinged and hair-sprayed out, but since the red carper arrivals are happening at 3-5 PM L.A. time, we see them in harsh daylight and it's probably a bit too hot for them to really feel comfortable. Sometimes it shows:

A more streamlined yellow dress was the one Mariska Hargitay was wearing. I love her, just not sure about the Sarah Palin hair:

Colorful dresses tend to steal the show and seem somehow more right at that time of the afternoon. There were several light aqua/sea foam colored dresses, as you can see on Jenna Fischer (Gustavo Cadile), Christina Applegate (Reem Acra) and Cynthia Nixon (Calvin Klein):

I like Brooke Shields too much to question the 80s glam of her dress (Badgley Mischka ):

Eva Longoria Parker was the most visible star who went with a short dress (Marchesa). Usually I dislike big bows on short women, but here it works, somehow:

I usually wait with the makeup recap until the day after, but since we're speaking of Eva I must comment on this so two years ago look, especially since I didn't like it in 2006, either. Too much black around the eyes, lips that are at least a shade too pale than healthy and the too-peachy blush that should have been named after J. Lo. I wish Eva would hire a new makeup artist, preferably of the Bobbi Brown school of thought.

Now, let's look at some black dresses, because you can't get more Hollywood than that. Debra Messing is gorgeous, but the dress (Monique Lhuillier), while pretty, seems a bit too much. It's a lot of goth drama for a hot L.A. night. And Kate Walsh is pulling off something most of us wouldn't (and shouldn't) attempt: horizontal stripes.

The next one isn't actually black, though it looked so in most photos and when I saw her briefly during the arrivals (I'm another one of those who didn't even consider watching the actual ceremony). I think Hayden Panetierre got it right with her midnight blue dress. Not many 18 year olds can look as polished and glamorous as this:

My favorite dress of the night- Heidi Klum in Armani Prive:

SAG Inspired Lips- Laura Geller Lip Stay

The makeup looks we saw on the red carpet last Sunday inspired a whole bunch of emails asking me to recommend neutral lip colors that would flatter the olive skinned and naturally pigmented lipped among us. It seems like I'm not the only one who thinks that Eva Longoria tends to choose lipsticks that are too pale for her (J. Lo also seems to make a similar mistake very often), unlike the flawless America Ferrera.
While I've already covered the subject in past posts, I do have a new favorite in the natural looking lip color category, and it's even a long-lasting one, that can survive an evening of smiling, kissing and careful champagne sipping.

Laura Geller Lip Stay is a two sided lip product. We've seen several of these in the last couple of years, from Chanel to Max Factor. Lip Stay is very reasonably priced ($13, compared to Chanel at $32, though the Geller one seems to contain less product), but doesn't compromise quality.
I tried it in Pout, a rosy brown color, a bit warmer than my favorite plummish colors (which are usually along the lines of what America Ferrera is wearing in the picture, Lancome's Raisinberry Le Lipstique with on of my most beloved glosses, Color Fever Gloss in On Fire. Scroll down the linked post for my review), but is still very flattering and completely neutral on my face, so it won't clash with a glamorous dress or eye makeup. In the tube there's more than a hint of shimmer, but it disappears on skin. The color is easy to spread, sits pretty, doesn't dry my lips or weigh them down and it stays on for quite a long time, as long as you don't challenge it with very hot beverages.
The clear gloss coat is pretty standard: not too shiny or sticky, not too resilient and smells of vanilla. You'll need to reapply this part throughout the day or night, but that's to be expected.
Tomorrow: A lip liner to match this look.

SAG Awards Hair & Makeup
The good news: the smoky eye look seems to be on its way out (I have nothing against the idea of a smoky eye, but what you see on the red carpet is usually lost in translation once you encounter it face to face in the East Village or the Jersey malls). Faces looked fresh, eyes reasonably (unless you're Lisa Rinna) accentuated with black eyeliner and mascara, matte skin, neutral (but usually not beige, except for Eva Longoria who should have gone a couple of shades darker) lips, very little shimmer and no more goopy Paris Hilton mouths.

Christina Applegate's makeup stood out, and not necessarily in her favor. I was happy to see a bolder lip color, but that shimmer all around her eyes looked weird (click on the image to see what I'm talking about).

Teri Hatcher seems as always to have a little more eye makeup than most. And since I didn't have it last night, here's also a picture of her dress:

The bad news is that almost everyone looked like they had their hair and makeup done by the same people. Other than a few actresses (Debra Messing, Marcia Cross, Angelina Jolie) the ruling hairstyle was the soft, messy updo. The weather didn't help things. It rained in L.A during the day and made for a soggy red carpet and frizzy hair.

Another thing of note is the absence of necklaces. Instead, everyone seems to have opted for long, dangling earrings. there were also some pretty bracelets.

An overview of the dresses is in last night's post.

SAG Awards- The Red Carpet Show
What do we have so far?

Six blue dresses (Marcia Cross, Andrea Bowen, Amanda Bynes, Nikki Blonski, Jenna Fischer, Kyra Sedgwick), two yellow dresses (Vanessa Williams, Kate Beckinsale), two florals (Teri Hatcher in Badgley Mischka, Cate Blanchett in a stunning Balenciaga) and a Seacrest-less crew that looks as uncomfortable without him as I am watching them conducting the most embarrassing red carpet coverage I've ever watched.

Other than lots of blue, metallic seems to be the order of the day, from platinum (Christina Applegate in Elie Saab) to gold (Debra Messing, in an Oscar De La Renta dress that was better in theory than in real life with all that armpit cleavage).
Little black dresses seem to be making a comeback (were they ever really out?) on Tina Fey in Alberta Ferretti and Ellen Page in Zac Posen, two of the most likable and eloquent actresses on the red carpet.

As far as hair goes, lots of soft, messy updos with long bangs. It's everywhere to a point where Debra Messing and her flowing open curls seem innovative. Or dated. I have yet to decide.
(Did I just hear Teri Hatcher and her unmoving forehead declaring she doesn't believe in Botox?)

From the look of Angelina Jolie's dress it seems like the pregnancy rumours might be true. I hope so, actually. Otherwise there's no excuse for all that tie-dye fabric. There's definitely enough room for twins in there.
There were few really dramatic dresses. Eva Longoria in Naeem Khan and Ellen Pompeo in Nina Ricci did the Old Hollywood thing successfully. Sandra Oh, on the other hand, not so much.

And Lisa Rinna is Little Miss Tacky:

Mostly (All) About Eva
Odds and ends for a Monday morning:
- Helg from Perfume Shrine is wondering what was Eva Longoria's fragrance on her wedding day. There's also a link to a list of celebrities and their favorite perfumes. I only skimmed the list, but I have to say that while not surprising, there's very little inspiration there. Young Hollywood is all about fruity-florals and laundry detergent scents, while classic Hollywood seems to have shared the same handful of bottles. Still, of interest is the fact that Creed's Irish Tweed Green that was created for Cary Grant, is now worn by his modern incarnation, George Clooney. I think I see a bottle in the Blond's future.
- Speaking of my husband: He was sitting next to me as I was writing my previous Eva Longoria post. He looked at the photo and commented: "That's a Chanel, right?". Apparently, he recognized both the fabric and the deconstructed trim. Color me proud.
- Last one about Eva's wedding: Look at this picture (courtesy of Mollygood. Click on the photo, it's worth it) of her mother-in-law, Tony Parker's mom. Can she be wearing Proenza Pink lipstick? I'm not saying a word about the roses on her ankles (or the cleavage).
- Since we're sort of the topic of celebrity obsession, Jake Halpern's book, "Fame Junkies" , offers an interesting perspective of this subculture. I have yet to finish the book, but so far I'm enjoying it.

Bridal glow? Paris? Whatever it is, Eva Longoria has never looked better. I love her makeup. The eyes are toned down from her usual too-smoky look and it works wonders.
