Emmys 2010 Live Blogging The Red Carpet

I was close to giving up on live blogging the Emmys red carpet. Between being semi high on DayQuil for an ultra-wicked cold and watching Ryan Seacrest trying to interview the Jersey Shore people, I was ready to doze off with the sound of little Sophie purring in my lap. Seriously, what could I possibly say when after a brief exposure to Snooki I start thinking Kim Kardashian is one of the classier looking women out there?

But then some trends started to emerge, I saw Lauren Graham in a gorgeous Yigal Azrouel gown that had all the magic of old Hollywood and the Mad Men ladies dropped the ball so spectacularly that I actually found a thing or two to say.

So back to Kim Kardashian, who really looked stunning. Both the dress (Marchesa) and her hair and makeup are a serious upgrade from what we see from her too often.

Lauren Graham plays an insufferable character on Parenthood, which is probably not very easy. Her red carpet appearances are usually great and this dress is no different. It's the hair that I'm not really loving. There's so much great hair tonight, whoever worked on Lauren could have done better.

**Did I just hear Giulianna Rancic telling Dianna Agron from Glee that she's not big enough a star to not talk about her personal life? Can someone please slap this woman for me?**

Back to hair, there are some clear trends all on the soft side- soft wavy updos, pony tails that aren't pulled back too tightly and natural soft waves (from experience, I can tell you that some of us need about 4 hours of work to get that "natural").

Two people had cleavage issues: Seal and Christina Hendricks. Seal can only blame himself (and maybe Heidi) for not buttoning up, Christina was camera-abused by the director in that juvenile move. Ugh. Then there was her hair, which can only be described as a mess. And was it my TV screen or did she have something stuck in her teeth when she arrived?

Another Mad Men mess was January Jones and the blue Versace dress on its stiff crinoline, uneven length and those little ramekins at the front. What was that all about?

And wasn't the opening act the best one ever?

An Emmy Moment

You'll have to forgive me for losing my sense of humor about this, but that little Family Guy clip showing Little Steweie beating his dog to a bloody pulp?

Not cool. At all.

Emmys 2009- Red Carpet Live Blogging

Blogging live. Stay tuned...

Heidi Klum in Marchesa, fresh looking makeup and an adoring husband. I think she makes Ryan Seacrest nervous, or is it Seal?

Curls! Lisa Edelstein is lovely and lively.

Elisabeth Moss is so much prettier than on Mad Men, but something is off about the hair style. One side looks too flat. I blame her fiance, Fred Armisen.

Mariska Hargitay showing some serious blue smoky eyes. I want her poise. And height.

Lots of fresh faces, very little red or plum lipstick.

Long hair, soft loose waves: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alyson Hannigan, Sandra Oh. It's pretty, and I suspect a lot more comfortable than bobby pins.

Pretty colors: Kyra Sedgwick in a pink Loren Scott (with way too much going on: ruching, shoulder bow and a bejeweled neckline or something. Not to mention a pair of clashing black pumps), Vanessa Williams and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in teal/electric blue. Lidsay Price is purple. These colors photograph better than the delicate pale ones (and keep me from falling asleep).

Christina Hendricks makes me wish I were a redhead. Lots of eyelash action there, but I still like the eye makeup. She definitely stands out.

I hope Blake Lively has enough fashion tape for her red Versace gown. It's a nip slip waiting to happen.

Speaking of which, looking at Patricia Arquette from the side, I doubt she's very comfortable in that dress. It's trying to give her a mammogram.

Worst makeup of the evening: Kim Kardashian. Hard to believe she's actually a very beautiful woman. Someone should be fired for this:

Mila Kunis is gorgeous, the color of her dress is my favorite, but the length looks awkward. At least we can see the shoes.

Emmys 2008 Hair And Makeup

Flowing hair, red lipstick, big lashes and No 'Bo

There's probably no statistics about the ratio of updos to big waves, but compared to award shows in the last couple of years, i got the feeling that the 60th Emmy awards saw many stars letting their hair flow in what I can only call the anti-Palin.

Thankfully, most stars avoided the Eva Longoria look, and while there was definitely an emphasis on big lashes, no other "I just got punched in the eye and it drained all the color from my lips" makeup was spotted. Instead, there was some real lip color. I love it, because seriously, if you can't wear glam red lipstick on the red carpet, where will do it?

And one last thing: We all have this stereotype about big stars with alien-like frozen faces, but it looks like this year we got to see some real faces. It doesn't mean they didn't do some subtle treatments here and there, but the laugh lines are there and the smiles actually reach their eyes. You can see it in some of the photos above as well as here, on the beautiful Cynthia Nixon.

Emmys 2008 Dresses And Makeup Highlights

As always, watching the Red Carpet Shoe makes me wish the entire E! team would be fired and replaced. Preferably by mimes. But we're not here to discuss Giuliana Rancic and her vocabulary, are we?

It's always a bit weird: The stars are in full evening wear, all blinged and hair-sprayed out, but since the red carper arrivals are happening at 3-5 PM L.A. time, we see them in harsh daylight and it's probably a bit too hot for them to really feel comfortable. Sometimes it shows:

A more streamlined yellow dress was the one Mariska Hargitay was wearing. I love her, just not sure about the Sarah Palin hair:

Colorful dresses tend to steal the show and seem somehow more right at that time of the afternoon. There were several light aqua/sea foam colored dresses, as you can see on Jenna Fischer (Gustavo Cadile), Christina Applegate (Reem Acra) and Cynthia Nixon (Calvin Klein):

I like Brooke Shields too much to question the 80s glam of her dress (Badgley Mischka ):

Eva Longoria Parker was the most visible star who went with a short dress (Marchesa). Usually I dislike big bows on short women, but here it works, somehow:

I usually wait with the makeup recap until the day after, but since we're speaking of Eva I must comment on this so two years ago look, especially since I didn't like it in 2006, either. Too much black around the eyes, lips that are at least a shade too pale than healthy and the too-peachy blush that should have been named after J. Lo. I wish Eva would hire a new makeup artist, preferably of the Bobbi Brown school of thought.

Now, let's look at some black dresses, because you can't get more Hollywood than that. Debra Messing is gorgeous, but the dress (Monique Lhuillier), while pretty, seems a bit too much. It's a lot of goth drama for a hot L.A. night. And Kate Walsh is pulling off something most of us wouldn't (and shouldn't) attempt: horizontal stripes.

The next one isn't actually black, though it looked so in most photos and when I saw her briefly during the arrivals (I'm another one of those who didn't even consider watching the actual ceremony). I think Hayden Panetierre got it right with her midnight blue dress. Not many 18 year olds can look as polished and glamorous as this:

My favorite dress of the night- Heidi Klum in Armani Prive:

Emmys 2007: Makeup Highlights

Cat eye looks better on some, less on others. I love it on Sandra Oh, not so sure about Ellen Pompeo:

No smoky eye and nude lip for Katherine Heigl. I might have chosen a slightly different shade of redlipstick, but the look is fabulous and sexy:

Heidi Klum pulls off the red lipstick perfectly:
